Dear SRI Friends and Supporters,

yesterday we had a beautiful episode, in the frame of the Space Renaissance Academy Webinar Series. https://youtu.be/-hpu91QNklM

Dr. Marie-Luise Heuser, head of the SR Academy Space Philosophy Laboratory, shared very important teachings, about transterrestrialist concepts in the philosophy, since the times of Plato and Aristotle, to the Renaissance, to nowadays.

Surprisingly, space travel was discussed by Giordano Bruno during the Renaissance.
Prof. Heuser owns the merit to have discovered, by means of her research, genuine pearls of space wisdom in the ancient philosophers, demonstrating that the concepts of open world -- and space travel as well -- were present in their works and dialogues.

Alberto Cavallo, one of the SRI Co-founders, and pasionate scholar of philosophy, added quite interesting informations about the cosmology of Buddhism, based on thousands of parallel universes, of which our Universe is just one, and each UNiverse having its birth (big bang?), development and death. Alberto also mentioned Luciano di Samosata, a Syrian living in Greece from 120 to 190 (about), who wrote "True Story", that can be considered maybe the first science fiction book. The book narrates the story of a war among the inhabitants of the Moon and the inhabitants of the Sun. To be remarked that, if nothing else, the Moon and the Sun were seen as celestial bodies not different from Earth. A very much more realistic cosmology, vs. the one constructed later by the Christian Church.

The discussion was so intense and fascinating that went ahead almost 2 hours, also expanding to the extreme urgence, today, to convince many more people (I wouldn't say "educate", being this a political goal, more than an educational one), that the Earth is a planet, not THE planet, and that 8 billion Earthers need to start expanding, to keep civilization alive and progressing.

By my side, i added that we -- humans -- need an utopia for us, for today, and not for another species (post-human?) to be born in the future.
We are made of flesh and blood, we feel pain and pleasure, and these are fundamental characteristics of being humans, making us capable of empathy, compassion, love...
Likely we will evolve, when living in space, but i like to think that we will become trans-human, i.e. more than human, keeping and further improving all of our human characteristics, and not post-human, an unknown new species, forgetful of its humanity.
Yes, space is dangerous for our physiology, yet Earth is more and more dangerous as well.
However, Prometheus is at our side: science and technology are in our toolbox!
Humankind needs a feasible space utopia today: the 'future' could be too late.

If you missed the webinar, definitely worth to see it now!

Ad Astra!
